How to choose a wireless CarPlay adapter: what to check before buying

A car with wired Apple CarPlay can be made wireless with a fairly cheap adapter. Before buying, check vehicle compatibility, port type and the adapter's connection features.

Apple CarPlay, the system that shows iPhone apps on a car's infotainment screen, works in many vehicles only when the phone is plugged in with a cable. Tech site Engadget explains that the wired link can be replaced with a wireless one without changing the car or its infotainment system: an adapter acts as a bridge between the car and the iPhone. These devices are generally plug-and-play, but they don't all perform equally well.

Compatibility comes first

An adapter only works in cars that already have built-in CarPlay over USB, since it simply converts the wired connection to wireless. A car without a CarPlay-capable system needs a portable CarPlay display instead. Compatibility can be checked in the adapter's description or on car forums; Amzfeel, for example, claims support for more than 800 vehicle models.

Ports matter too: older cars tend to have USB-A, newer ones USB-C. Buying an adapter with the matching port avoids needing an extra USB converter. Some models receive no firmware updates, so new iOS versions can break their support. Check that the adapter works with the iOS version on your iPhone and, if possible, choose one that can be updated.

Features that make a difference

Auto-reconnect is important: after initial setup, the iPhone starts wireless CarPlay on its own. Without it, you have to pair manually each time you start the car.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards also count. Adapters supporting 5GHz Wi-Fi, which helps avoid congestion, and at least Bluetooth 5.0, for quick connections, tend to be more reliable and stable. Cheaper units may use older standards, which can cause lag and interference.

Not every adapter works with steering wheel controls or hands-free Siri, so check this if those features matter to you. More expensive models add extras such as video streaming apps or Android Auto support, and a car shared by several people benefits from an adapter that supports multiple paired iPhones. Most adapters, such as those from Ottocast, cost $30 to $50, while models with more features can cost more.
