How to choose the right toothpaste: Expert advice
Dental hygienist Tenika Patterson explains that fluoride content is the most important factor in toothpaste and offers tips for selecting different types based on individual oral health needs.

Standing in front of the toothpaste shelf in a store can be overwhelming due to the vast selection, but according to dental hygienist Tenika Patterson, the primary criterion is fluoride content. Fluoride strengthens enamel, prevents cavities, and helps repair early damage. She recommends choosing a toothpaste with an official seal from reputable dental associations, ensuring safety and efficacy.
Whitening toothpastes
These contain mild abrasive particles that remove surface stains from coffee, tea, etc. However, prolonged use can increase tooth sensitivity. Patterson emphasizes that they do not change the natural tooth color, only remove surface stains. For significant changes, professional whitening should be considered.
Natural and herbal toothpastes
These are aimed at people who want to avoid synthetic ingredients. Many are free of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and use natural extracts like neem, miswak, tea tree oil, and aloe vera. However, Patterson warns that these often lack fluoride and official dental association approval, so consulting a specialist before switching is essential, especially if you have cavities or gum disease.
Charcoal toothpaste
Activated charcoal is a strong abrasive, and there is no evidence of its real benefit. In the long term, it can damage enamel and increase sensitivity, so regular use is not recommended.
How to choose?
The hygienist advises: ensure the toothpaste contains fluoride; identify your oral health needs (sensitive teeth, plaque, gum issues); read packaging and look for dental association seals; consult a hygienist or dentist. Even the best toothpaste is only one part of oral hygiene – it should be used together with dental floss and regular dental visits.
