How "Limousine in the Color of Midsummer Night" was made: director Streičs reveals the source of film's power

Film director Jānis Streičs once shared that the power of the film "Limousine in the Color of Midsummer Night" lies not only in witty phrases or individual scenes, but in the events and the viewers themselves, the Latvian people. This insight comes from a conversation with film critic Dairu Āboliņa.

The film is based on a story by Māra Svīre, first published in 1977 in the magazine "Karogs". Two years later it was released as a book. The script proposal was submitted to the Riga Film Studio already in 1978, showing a quick transition from literature to film.

Interestingly, the film's production was initiated by a very practical reason: the Riga Film Studio, as a producing entity, had to fulfill a set production plan. After Streičs' detective film "Unfinished Supper" (1979) was released, the studio's management called the director to urgently make another film to meet the plan. Thus, "Limousine in the Color of Midsummer Night" became not only an artistic expression but also a production necessity.

The film's creation process proves that sometimes directors are forced to create for purely practical reasons, and yet the result can become a national heritage. Streičs' view on the film's power reminds us that true value lies in the relationship with the audience.
