Cape Verde's men's football team marked their first ever World Cup appearance with a memorable result, earning a 0-0 draw against powerhouse Spain in Atlanta. This gave the debutants their first point in the tournament.

The first dangerous chance came in the 39th minute when Ferran Torres hit the crossbar. The rebound fell to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose header was brilliantly saved by Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha. Vozinha continued his heroics in the second half, denying Torres again and Fabian Ruiz. In the 73rd minute, Mikel Merino's shot was comfortably caught by the keeper. Oyarzabal later fired over the bar. In stoppage time, Cape Verde almost snatched a win when Dinej headed from a corner, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon held the ball.

Spain, led by teenage star Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres, are considered one of the tournament favorites. Cape Verde qualified for their first World Cup by finishing ahead of Egypt in their qualifying group.

This World Cup is the first with 48 teams, hosted across Mexico, the USA, and Canada. The 12 groups see the top two teams and the eight best third-placed sides advance. The group stage ends June 27, with the final set for July 19.
