When it's actually worth paying more for earbuds

Back in the mid-2000s, the plastic white earbuds bundled with iPods became a symbol of portable music, despite their notoriously poor sound quality. Since then, the landscape has shifted dramatically — even budget wired and wireless earbuds today offer a far better listening experience than those old freebies ever did.

Two categories of premium earbuds

The priciest earbuds on the market generally fall into two groups. The first are professional in-ear monitors (IEMs), aimed at audiophiles, musicians and sound engineers, built purely to deliver top-tier audio quality without extra frills. The second group is high-end true wireless stereo (TWS) buds, such as the AirPods Pro 3 or Sony WF-1000XM6, marketed as tech-forward lifestyle accessories packed with features like active noise cancellation and spatial audio. While these models do offer improved sound over cheaper alternatives, audio quality isn't their main selling point.

IEMs are designed to sit deeper in the ear canal, providing strong passive noise isolation, and are commonly used by musicians on stage or engineers working in studios. Most of their cost comes from high-end audio components and precise acoustic tuning.

Budget options have improved significantly

Not everyone needs to spend big on earbuds — listeners who've never touched an equalizer setting in a streaming app won't notice the subtle benefits of premium models. Noise cancellation, too, is now available at a much lower price. Professional IEMs can cost several thousand dollars, but most audiophiles and musicians tend to stay under $500, with decent options available for as little as $20 or less.
