Katie Taylor bows out with triumphant farewell at Croke Park

Irish boxing icon Katie Taylor closed out her remarkable career close to where it began, defeating Flora Pili in front of 83,000 fans at Dublin's Croke Park — roughly three miles from the venue of her first official bout 25 years earlier. The 40-year-old fighter retires with a record of 26 wins and a single defeat, cementing her legacy as a three-time, two-weight undisputed world champion.

From hidden identity to national hero

Born in 1986 in Bray, the youngest of four children, Taylor grew up with a father who was a former Irish champion and a mother who was among Ireland's first female boxing officials. With women's boxing barely recognised in Ireland at the time, she initially competed disguised within a male environment. In 2001, at just 15, she took part in the first officially sanctioned women's boxing bout held in Ireland since the sport had previously been banned.

Her talent proved influential beyond the ring: in 2007 her performances in front of International Olympic Committee members helped persuade officials to add women's boxing to the London 2012 Olympic programme. Her subsequent gold-medal victory over Sofya Ochigava became one of the most celebrated moments in modern Irish sporting history, turning her into a household name.

Professional career and the historic Serrano rivalry

After a disappointing showing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Taylor turned professional under promoter Eddie Hearn, becoming undisputed lightweight champion within three years. In 2022, she headlined a sold-out Madison Square Garden against Amanda Serrano — the first time a women's bout had topped the bill at the famous venue, widely regarded as a landmark moment for women's professional boxing. She later avenged her only professional defeat, against Chantelle Cameron, to add a second weight-class title.

At her final news conference, Taylor said the night exceeded her wildest expectations and thanked supporters who had followed her career around the world. She indicated she intends to stay involved in boxing, even as she steps away from competing, leaving the sport in a far stronger position than when she began.
