Camille releases triple album on motherhood after 15 years of work
Oscar-winning French singer Camille has released 'The Sound of Milk', a triple album chronicling her experience raising two children, from birth to adolescence.

French singer Camille, known for her vocal experimentation and an Oscar for her song in the film 'Emilia Pérez', has released a triple album titled 'The Sound of Milk' after 15 years of work. The album comprises three parts: 'Naissance' (2015), 'Enfance' (2020), and 'Adolescence' (2025), each capturing a different stage of raising her two children with composer Clément Ducol.
Camille says she was not ready to release the songs earlier because they are deeply personal. She needed time to step back and feel grounded enough to share them in a world she believes does not respect children and mothers.
The first two parts are atmospheric and created almost without traditional instruments. 'Naissance' is essentially a field recording of baby gurgles and found sounds. 'Enfance' resembles a 'pocket musical', full of ditties parents sing when teaching kids about stairs and washing machines. Only the third part, 'Adolescence', aligns more with Camille's usual pop style; it addresses ecological collapse and disregard for future generations.
Camille admits she had to convince her label that these songs were worthy of release, as they were considered 'mother's things' that should stay at home. She initially struggled with internalized misogyny, thinking such music was not commercial or artistic. Now she believes motherhood is art and could make ten more albums on the topic.
The album includes songs that appear in different versions across parts, such as 'Monsieur Garçon', which contrasts her teenage son with his toddler self. Camille describes motherhood as 'hallucinatory' and 'mystical'. She rejects the notion that artists need to be unhappy to create; her optimism helps combat her own darkness.
Her children love the album; her son invited her to sing the songs at his school show. However, for the first time, her family will not join her on tour, so Camille plans to create a new 'family' with her band and audience.
