Canada-based Ukrainian ethnomusicologist Marička: Art and politics inseparable
Ukrainian ethnomusicologist Marička, residing in Canada, has been using her art to support Ukraine since the 2014 Maidan events; her band "Daughters of Donbas" topped the European World Music chart in April 2026.
Marička, a Ukrainian ethnomusicologist and folklorist living in Canada, has dedicated her voice and art to Ukraine's struggle for freedom since the 2014 Maidan barricades. She gained international recognition with projects such as "Bozhychi", "Lemon Bucket Orkestra", "Balaklava Blues", and the latest ensemble "Daughters of Donbas". The debut album "Songs of Stolen Children" by "Daughters of Donbas" reached number one on the European World Music chart in April 2026. Marička believes that the Revolution of Dignity proved that creative individuals cannot remain outside politics. Her work continues to highlight Ukrainian culture and the ongoing fight for independence.
