Many people planning a trip encounter an unexpected problem – constipation. According to Ilona Vilkoite, head of Dr. Vilkaite's Stomach Clinic and a gastroenterologist, speaking on the TV24 program "Ārsts atbild" (The Doctor Answers), this is not always related to unusual or unhealthy food that people often eat while traveling.

Emotional factors

According to the specialist, psychological and emotional circumstances play a significant role. In an unfamiliar environment, a person has to adjust to an unknown place and toilet, which causes discomfort for many. Traveling in a group can add further stress, since knowing that other people are waiting outside the door can reduce a person's ability to relax.

Vilkoite emphasizes that these emotional feelings genuinely affect bowel function. That is why some experienced travelers already know to pack not only activated charcoal but also medication to help correct constipation before a trip.

Individual reactions

The specialist notes that every person's body and digestive system reacts differently to travel – for some, changes in environment cause noticeable digestive issues, while for others they go almost unnoticed. This individual difference explains why not all travelers face the same complaints.
