Why some iPhone calls have no decline option while others do

A locked iPhone shows only a slide-to-answer control for incoming calls, while an unlocked one offers both answer and decline. Calls can also be declined with the side button, and several tools exist for handling unwanted callers.

The incoming call screen on Apple's iPhone looks different depending on whether the device is locked, and the technology site Engadget explains that this is default behavior rather than a setting gone wrong.

Why the buttons differ

When an iPhone is locked, an incoming call shows a "slide to answer" control. When it is unlocked, the user sees both answer and decline options. Depending on the Incoming Calls setting, the Accept and Decline buttons appear in a compact banner or across the full screen, but both stay available. This behavior can be adjusted in Settings.

A call can be declined or silenced without an on-screen button. Pressing the side button twice quickly declines the call and sends the caller to voicemail. Pressing either volume button silences the ring without declining the call. Both methods work whether the screen is locked or not.

Replying with a text

If the side button is pressed the moment the phone rings, the caller will probably realize the call was rejected. For that reason the incoming call interface includes a Message option, which sends a text instead of answering. There are prepared replies and a Custom option for writing your own. When a call appears as a banner, tapping it reveals more options. The prepared replies can be edited ahead of time under Settings > Apps > Phone > Respond with Text.

Blocking unwanted calls

According to the US Federal Trade Commission, there were more than 2.6 million complaints to the Do Not Call registry, which is meant to protect people from telemarketing calls, in fiscal year 2025. A number can be blocked by opening it in Recents and choosing Block Caller. In iOS 26 and later, Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers offers the options Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence. With Silence, every unknown call goes to voicemail without ringing, so an important call from a new number could be missed.
