Why Pets Take Your Spot on the Sofa as Soon as You Get Up
Cats and dogs often settle into the place their owner has just left. The reasons may include scent, warmth, a learned way of getting attention or, less often, guarding a valued resource.

Many pet owners know the scene: you get up from the sofa to grab your phone or make tea, and when you come back, a cat or dog has already settled into your spot. An explainer published by the Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avīze lists several possible reasons for this behaviour, most of them quite ordinary.
Your scent feels safe
For many animals, smell is an especially important sense. A spot where a person has just sat keeps their scent, which a pet may associate with a familiar, safe environment and with the person it is attached to. The animal may therefore be seeking not only comfort but also a feeling of closeness. This does not mean that every time it is consciously expressing affection.
Warmth and comfort
After someone gets up, the seat retains body heat for a while. A soft cushion or blanket may also be more comfortable than the animal's usual bed. Given a choice between a cool bed and a warm, freshly vacated spot, the decision can be obvious, especially if the spot is near the owner.
Getting attention
The animal may have learned that taking this spot draws a reaction from its owner: talking, laughing, petting or attempts to coax it to move. If this repeats, the habit can become fixed. A pet does not necessarily follow a premeditated plan; it simply repeats behaviour that has previously produced the desired result.
Is it a bid for dominance?
A popular belief holds that the animal is asserting superiority, but settling onto a cushion is not enough to draw that conclusion. What matters more is how it behaves when the owner wants the spot back. If the pet calmly gets up or moves elsewhere, there is usually no cause for concern. If it freezes, tenses, growls or reacts aggressively to an approach, it may be guarding a resource it values.
Why your spot specifically
In a household with several people, a pet that keeps choosing one person's chair or side of the sofa may simply find it more comfortable or warmer. It may also be especially attached to that person and more often seek places that carry their scent.
