Why periods stop: the main causes beyond pregnancy

A missed period isn't always a sign of pregnancy — stress, weight changes, intense exercise or hormonal shifts can also be behind it, though doctors say prolonged absence shouldn't be overlooked.

The absence of menstruation does not automatically mean pregnancy, but if it persists for months, it is a symptom worth paying attention to. Cycle disruptions can stem from a range of factors, including everyday stress, rapid weight loss, intense physical training, hormonal contraceptives, or polycystic ovary syndrome.

What counts as normal

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a menstrual cycle lasting 21 to 35 days is generally considered normal. When periods stop altogether, the condition is medically known as amenorrhea. If a woman who previously had a regular cycle goes three months or longer without a period, this is classified as secondary amenorrhea.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that cycle fluctuations can occur for various reasons, but a prolonged absence of menstruation is a symptom that should not be ignored.

Ruling out pregnancy comes first

If a period doesn't arrive on schedule following unprotected intercourse, the first step recommended by specialists is to rule out pregnancy, since it is the most common cause of secondary amenorrhea. A lack of menstruation is a natural occurrence during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Periods also stop naturally with the onset of menopause. Per WHO data, natural menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, and is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period, provided there is no other obvious explanation.

Stress can play a role too

Psychological stress can significantly affect the menstrual cycle, potentially halting or altering it. For this reason, prolonged irregularities should not be attributed solely to obvious physiological causes — consulting a doctor is advised.
