Why drastically cutting carbs rarely works in the long run

Sharply restricting carbohydrates is one of the most popular ways to lose weight, but completely eliminating an entire food group from the diet usually proves impossible to sustain long-term.

When it comes to shedding weight, many people reach for one of the most common strategies: drastically cutting carbohydrates from their diet. The appeal is obvious — in the first weeks, the scale tends to move quickly, creating the impression that the approach is working.

Why the results don't last

The trouble shows up at the next stage. Completely removing an entire food group, such as all sources of carbohydrates, is a radical step that is very difficult to maintain over time. Carbohydrates are present throughout everyday meals, so such strict limits demand constant willpower and giving up habits that eventually become exhausting to sustain.

Rather than chasing dramatic, hard-to-keep-up changes, a more sustainable path is making small, consistent adjustments to one's diet. Instead of banning a whole category of food outright, gradually reshaping daily eating habits tends to be realistic for years, not just a few weeks or months.

Bottom line

A sudden, radical change to one's diet can produce a visible effect on the scale soon after it begins, but that result is often short-lived, since the regimen itself isn't built to last. Small, steady changes to what's on the plate are a more reliable route to lasting results than a fast but unsustainable drop in weight.
