Why fruit flies invade your kitchen so fast – and how to get rid of them
Fruit flies, or drosophila, breed astonishingly quickly in warm conditions because their entire life cycle can take just days. Getting rid of them requires eliminating the spots where they feed and lay eggs, not just swatting the adults.
The tiny insects with bright red eyes that seem to appear out of nowhere in the kitchen are fruit flies, known scientifically as drosophila. They measure only a few millimetres, come in yellow, yellow-brown or brown shades, have dark stripes across their abdomen, and males are typically smaller and darker-spotted than females. The species holds particular scientific significance: more than half of its genome resembles the human genome, which is why researchers have used fruit flies in experiments since 1909.
A short life, but explosive breeding
An adult fruit fly typically lives only a couple of weeks, but the real issue is the speed of reproduction. In warm conditions, each stage of development — from egg to adult — can take just days or even hours, and a mature female can lay hundreds of eggs. This is why an infestation can seem to appear in a kitchen almost overnight.
Where they live and how they get in
Fruit flies favour warm, humid environments with soft, overripe, fermenting or spoiled fruit and vegetables, as well as decaying mushrooms and other sour or rotting matter. Compost bins and kitchen sinks are especially attractive to them. They most often enter homes on produce bought from shops or markets that already carries their eggs, but they can also be drawn in by juices, fermenting products or old coffee grounds. The spot where a fly finds food usually becomes the breeding ground for its larvae, which feed and develop there until just before pupating. During colder months, part of the population survives winter as larvae or pupae in a sheltered, relatively warm spot, which can include soil.
How to get rid of them
Killing the adult flies alone won't solve the problem — as long as a food and breeding source remains in the home, a new generation will quickly appear. The key task is therefore to locate and eliminate these feeding and breeding spots.
