Why Xiaomi phones aren't banned in the US but are rarely sold there
Xiaomi is the third largest smartphone maker globally, yet its phones are almost invisible in the US market. Despite a brief ban in 2021 being lifted, the company chooses to stay out due to strategic reasons.

Although Xiaomi holds nearly 10% of the global smartphone market and ranks third worldwide, its phones are uncommon in the United States. Many Americans mistakenly believe Xiaomi devices are banned, but in reality, they can be imported. The US government briefly blacklisted Xiaomi in early 2021 under the Trump administration, but the ban was lifted in May 2021 after a lawsuit.
Xiaomi avoids the US market for several reasons. First, the risk of future blacklisting makes large investments risky. Second, Xiaomi's success stems from developing markets where it sells phones with very thin profit margins (around 5%). The US market requires partnering with carriers, which is costly and complex. Instead, Xiaomi sells accessories like air purifiers and chargers in the US, but not phones.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi is focusing on China's electric vehicle market, having launched the SU7 sedan, which costs under $32,000. However, these cars lack US road certification.
