Carragher: Newcastle face a tough season after defeat to Everton
Everton beat Newcastle United 1-0 in an English Premier League football match, and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher predicts a difficult season for the hosts. Manager Matthias Jaissle admitted his plan did not work.

Newcastle United lost 1-0 at home to Everton at St James' Park on Monday night in the Premier League, England's top football division. Thierno Barry scored the only goal in the second half, giving Everton their first away win of the league season. It was Newcastle's fourth defeat in five games in all competitions. Afterwards, Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher warned that the club could be in for a long and difficult campaign.
League position
Newcastle have fallen to 13th in the table, only four points above the bottom three. They travel to Fulham, who are low in the standings, on Saturday. Supporters booed the team at both half-time and full-time.
No Premier League club has lost more home games than Newcastle in 2026 (seven). They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 14 home league games, the longest such run in the club's league history.
Carragher's assessment
Carragher said Monday's game was more important for Newcastle than last week's League Cup defeat at Everton, while the reverse was true for Everton. In his view, the team looks flat and a little boring at home, which contrasts with the aggressive, front-footed style associated with manager Matthias Jaissle's Red Bull background. He added that concerns about performances and underlying numbers had existed even earlier in the season, and noted that the squad has many young players and a young manager while the crowd expects more.
The manager's view
Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe in August, took responsibility for the display. He said the intended approach was not delivered, that the team was not brave enough in possession and played too many long balls. Newcastle did not register a shot on target until the 85th minute. The manager also acknowledged a lack of confidence among both young and experienced players, and said he understood the fans' reaction.
