Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 by Everton at St James' Park on Monday in English football's Premier League, and the home supporters booed the team at the final whistle. It was Newcastle's second loss to Everton in a week, following their Carabao Cup (English League Cup) exit on Thursday. For German manager Matthias Jaissle, it was a fourth defeat in six league games, and the side sits in the bottom half of the table with 11 points from nine matches.

How the match was lost

Thierno Barry scored the winner after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek let a routine shot squirm under his body. Substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off. Newcastle had 17 attempts but only two were on target, and the team has scored once from its last 47 shots in all competitions.

Jaissle said he was responsible for the result and understood the fans' reaction. He felt Barry's goal should have been ruled out for a foul on Fabian Schar, but admitted his players lacked the bravery to fight back. Captain Dan Burn said the team was not ruthless enough in either box.

Statistics and background

No Premier League side has lost more home games in 2026 than Newcastle (7). The club has failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 consecutive home league games, its longest such run. They have lost 16 of their last 18 league matches in which they conceded first.

Jaissle took over in the summer from Eddie Howe, who had been in charge for five years. Several key players, including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, also left. The 38-year-old signed a four-year contract. Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher said that at home the team looks flat and boring.

Newcastle's last game before the November international break is away at Fulham on Saturday. Arsenal (home) and Brighton (away) follow after the break.
