King Charles III is set to become the first monarch in modern British history to publicly disclose the amount of his income and tax data. According to the BBC, citing Buckingham Palace sources, the information on his tax payments will be released on Thursday as a new element of the annual royal family financial report.

Palace sources say the decision was made personally by the king. Buckingham Palace stated that the move is part of a modernization program aimed at ensuring greater transparency and "promoting broader understanding of our accountability." It also responds to calls for more openness about royal finances following scandals involving Prince Andrew.

The disclosed information will cover the king's tax payments for the previous fiscal year, 2024–2025, and will include taxes on his income, such as profits from the Duchy of Lancaster, personal investments, and income from private estates like Sandringham and Balmoral. The Duchy of Lancaster, a property business comprising estates in northern England and real estate in central London, provides a significant portion of the monarch's personal income—last year it was around £24 million.

While monarchs are not required to pay income tax, inheritance tax from a previous monarch, or capital gains tax, the king voluntarily pays income tax and capital gains tax on any sale of private assets. For the first time, the total tax paid will be published, including tax on the Duchy of Lancaster's profits.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said this is part of a broader initiative to increase openness to the public. "Simply put, we continue to modernize and evolve," he said, confirming the commitment to annually publish the king's tax information. The financial report, to be published next week, is expected to include a more detailed overview of royal finances.
