King Charles gathers AI heavyweights in Scotland, warns of "existential risks"

King Charles III of Britain has brought together some of the most influential players in artificial intelligence for a meeting in Scotland, including representatives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic. The gathering focused on the future of the technology and the risks it poses.
The King acknowledged that artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly improve people's lives, including benefits in medicine. At the same time, he noted that the very creators of these technologies are increasingly warning about the possibility of the field developing in far more dangerous directions. A particular concern raised was the risk that powerful AI systems could fall into the wrong hands and be used for destructive purposes.
Debate over self-regulation
The meeting took place as the technology industry increasingly debates whether the pace of AI development has outstripped the ability to control the risks it creates. Central to these discussions is the question of whether tech companies can adequately police themselves or whether stricter rules are needed.
Nvidia's chief executive, Jensen Huang, emphasized that companies themselves must take responsibility for the safety of their technologies. In his view, if an AI product is not yet sufficiently safe, it should not be released to users but should continue to be refined and tested.
King Charles, for his part, urged industry leaders to think not only about how powerful they can make new technologies, but also about ensuring that artificial intelligence remains under human control and serves the public interest. He called on governments and the technology sector to cooperate in establishing shared safety principles.
