Ukraine's full-scale war with Russia has now lasted longer than World War I, which spanned 1,568 days from 1914 to 1918. This comparison was made by Ukrainian journalist Mykhailo Dubynyansky, noting that the current conflict has crossed this symbolic threshold.
Both wars began with expectations of quick victories. In 1914, Germany's plan to swiftly defeat France failed, as did Russia's invasion of East Prussia. In 2022, Russia's blitzkrieg in Ukraine collapsed, turning into a prolonged war. Similarly, Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive did not yield the hoped-for results.
Technological Transformation
World War I introduced machine guns, tanks, and chemical weapons, reshaping the battlefield. Modern warfare is dominated by drones, which make the front transparent and enable strikes deep into enemy territory. Drones have become the primary tool, replacing various World War I weapons.
War of Attrition
Both World War I and the Ukraine war are wars of attrition, where each side aims to exhaust the other.
