Heatwave in Europe: Professor warns tap water is not enough

Heatwaves, already responsible for nearly 500,000 deaths worldwide each year, are becoming more frequent, intense, and dangerous. This is highlighted by the latest report from the UN Environment Programme. The impact is particularly evident in Europe, where temperatures have reached up to 40°C in some places this week.

Heat warnings have been issued in 26 countries, and Latvia is among them. People are advised to stay in the shade and drink plenty of fluids. However, gastroenterologist Professor Anatolijs Danilāns emphasizes that spring water alone is not enough during hot weather. While common advice such as seeking shade and staying hydrated is well known, the professor points out that the type of liquid consumed also matters.

In Latvia, as elsewhere in Europe, the heat calls for extra caution. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight during midday, cool rooms frequently, and replenish fluids — but not only with spring water, as it may be insufficient to restore the minerals lost by the body.
