Carter Sherman, a seasoned journalist covering sex, gender, and politics, has shared insights into her daily routines and cultural tastes. Currently a senior reporter at The Guardian and co-host of the podcast Stateside with Kai and Carter, Sherman has an impressive resume: she previously wrote for Vice, Elle, Ms. magazine, and Los Angeles magazine. She has won a Scripps Howard Award, a National Press Club Journalism Award, and received four Emmy nominations. Her book, “The Second Coming: Sex and the Next Generation’s Fight Over Its Future,” is based on interviews with over 100 people under 30 and examines how the internet and political polarization have reshaped sex and relationships.

Sherman’s most indispensable tool is a French press coffee maker; hailing from Seattle, she considers herself a coffee snob. She admits that the number of open tabs on her browser is limitless. The video game she has fondest memories of is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which terrified her as a child because of the music in the Deku Tree dungeons. She wishes she had created the “Happy Birthday” song for its royalties. Sherman is proudest of her book, which she sees as the culmination of a decade of reporting on reproductive health, gender, and sexuality.

Currently, she is obsessed with the TV show Rick and Morty, having devoured all eight seasons in two weeks. When feeling stuck, she scrolls through a list of evocative quotes she keeps in her Notes app, including lines from Shirley Jackson, Carson McCullers, and Katie Kitamura. She believes concert tickets are worth splurging on. The tagline for her biopic would be: “At least she tried.”
