What you need to watch Netflix in 4K on Chrome

Netflix now supports 4K streaming through Google Chrome, but only under strict hardware and software conditions. Mac users must still rely on Safari for 4K playback.

Watching Netflix in 4K resolution on a computer no longer requires Microsoft Edge or the dedicated Windows app — Google Chrome now supports it as well, though only for PC users. Mac owners still need to use Safari to unlock 4K streaming.

The first requirement is subscribing to Netflix's Premium plan, since 4K content is unavailable on the Standard or ad-supported tiers. A capable display is equally important, as most monitors only offer 1080p or 1440p resolution and cannot take advantage of 4K streaming even with the right subscription.

Technical requirements

Support for HDCP 2.2, a digital copy-protection protocol, is essential for both the display and the computer's video output, including the specific port on the graphics card. The operating system must also support the HEVC codec — built into macOS by default, while Windows users may need to install the HEVC Video Extensions package from the Microsoft Store. Although Netflix is gradually shifting toward the more efficient AV1 codec, HEVC support remains important for 4K playback.

On the hardware side, Netflix requires at least an Nvidia GeForce 1050 or newer GPU, or an AMD Radeon RX 400 or newer, paired with a 7th-generation Intel Core CPU or newer, or an AMD Ryzen processor. The PC must run Windows 11 with up-to-date drivers.

Chromebook Plus and Chromebox devices face similarly strict conditions, needing a Premium subscription, an HDCP 2.2-compatible 4K display, and Chrome OS 76 or later.

Checking your streaming quality

Even after meeting all requirements, users can confirm they're actually receiving a 4K stream by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D during playback, which brings up an overlay showing bitrate and resolution. Anything below 3840 × 2160 means the stream isn't true 4K. In that case, it's worth checking the Playback Settings in the Netflix account menu and switching Data Usage to High/Best Video. A fast and stable internet connection remains essential for smooth 4K streaming.
