Garlic Farming in 'Kramiņi': From Hobby to Seasonal Family Work
In the 'Kramiņi' farm in Ludza region, garlic cultivation has evolved from a hobby into a seasonal family activity, complementing their beekeeping and educational tours.

The 'Kramiņi' farm in Mērdzene parish, Ludza region, has been practicing organic agriculture for many years. It is run by Leontīna and Rolands Zeļči, who care for nearly a hundred bee colonies. The farm is known for its award-winning honey, beeswax candles, and educational tours.
In recent years, garlic cultivation has been developed at 'Kramiņi', starting as a hobby but now becoming a seasonal job involving the whole family. The second generation – son Mārtiņš, his wife Lita, and their daughter Emīlija – actively participate in the farm work.
The garlic is grown organically and adds to the existing range of beekeeping and honey products. The farm continues to offer tours where visitors can learn about both bees and garlic farming. The Zeļči family plans to further expand the farm's activities while maintaining organic principles.
