Battle of Kleidion: Clash of Byzantine Emperor and Bulgarian Tsar in 1014
On July 29, 1014, the Battle of Kleidion (near modern Klyuch village) took place between Byzantine Emperor Basil II and Bulgarian Tsar Samuil. The Byzantines won, but the emperor’s cruel treatment of prisoners earned him the nickname “Bulgar-slayer.”

On July 29, 1014, a decisive battle was fought between the Byzantine Empire and the First Bulgarian Empire. The opposing armies met near Kleidion—a village in present-day Greece, known as Klyuch. Both monarchs led their forces: Byzantine Emperor Basil II and Bulgarian Tsar Samuil.
Outcome of the Battle
The Byzantines held superior numbers and tactics, securing a decisive victory. Tsar Samuil suffered a heavy defeat that weakened Bulgaria’s regional standing. However, the most enduring memory is Emperor Basil II’s actions after the battle.
Cruelty and Nickname
After the victory, Basil II ordered thousands of Bulgarian prisoners to be blinded, leaving every hundredth man with one eye so they could lead the rest back to their tsar. This brutal retaliation earned him the epithet “Bulgar-slayer” (Greek: Βασιλεύς Βουλγαροκτόνος). The battle and its aftermath cemented Byzantine dominance in the Balkans and led to the collapse of the Bulgarian Empire within a few years.
