What Android Status Bar Icons Mean
The Android status bar contains multiple icons that indicate network status, battery level, device modes, and call activity. This article explains common symbols found on Android phones.

The top strip of an Android phone holds a wealth of information. Icons in the status bar fall into categories: network, battery, device state, and calls. While shapes may vary slightly between manufacturers, meanings remain largely consistent.
Network icons: The Wi-Fi symbol (wedge shape with curved lines) shows connection strength—more solid lines mean stronger signal. An exclamation mark next to it indicates local network connectivity without internet; an X means no internet. Cellular signal bars represent mobile network strength, with letters like 5G, LTE, 4G, or 3G indicating data speed. R beside bars means roaming. A small airplane icon signals Airplane Mode, disabling all wireless communications. Bluetooth's B-like icon appears when it's enabled. Two incomplete circles with a dot indicate the phone is acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot. An N with a double dash stands for NFC (Near Field Communication).
Battery icons: A battery outline shows remaining charge. A lightning bolt inside or beside it indicates charging. When the battery icon turns orange, red, or yellow, Battery Saver is active, restricting background activities.
Device state icons: A teardrop-shaped map pin indicates GPS is active. A tiny clock icon shows an active alarm. A solid circle with a horizontal line in the middle is Do Not Disturb mode, silencing calls and notifications. A speaker icon with a line through it means silent mode; a speaker with wavy lines indicates vibrate mode.
Call icons: A phone handset icon means a call is in progress. A handset with a broken arrow represents a missed call. A crossed-out microphone shows the mic is muted. A handset with waves above indicates speakerphone is on.
Other icons: The left side of the status bar displays notification icons from apps like social media, news, or security cameras. Icons also appear for downloads in progress or system updates. Understanding these symbols helps users quickly grasp their phone's status.
