X adds a video editor to encourage creators to post original content, not stolen reposts

X (formerly Twitter) has launched a new video editor and recording tools aimed at encouraging creators to publish original content instead of reposting others' material.

Social network X, which has long struggled with bots, is introducing new video editing and recording features to promote original content creation. The update includes the ability to overlay captions in multiple languages and customize their appearance, as well as green-screen tools that work with photos from the phone's camera roll or other X posts.

Product head Nikita Bier stated that one of the biggest priorities is to give creators tools to make original content and reward them. More updates to the video editor are expected in the coming weeks. Bier noted that many posts from top accounts contain stolen material, sometimes years after the content originally went viral.

While a video editor alone won't solve the repost problem, X hopes it will help creators produce original work. However, to foster a thriving creator ecosystem, X must ensure creators can reach a broad audience of real people and monetize effectively. Compared to competitors like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube—which have established ecosystems with consistent payouts—X will need additional incentives.

X also lacks built-in tools for creators to report stolen work. For instance, Meta allows Reels creators to block stolen content or add attribution links. YouTube has long offered tools for finding and removing unauthorized re-uploads.

Bier mentioned that X identifies and suspends 208 bots per minute, and previously half the product team was focused on anti-spam features. He also noted that videos already account for nearly half of all impressions on X, so this is not just an attempt to imitate TikTok. The new video editor and recorder are initially available on iOS; the Android app is being rebuilt.
