Modernization Improves Accessibility
Latvia is implementing a large-scale modernization of railway passenger infrastructure with funding from the European Union's Cohesion Fund. The project aims to make train travel more comfortable, safer, and accessible, especially for people with reduced mobility. The total cost is €52.9 million, with 85% covered by the Cohesion Fund and 15% from the state budget.
Currently, passengers are served from modernized platforms at 30 stations and stops out of a planned 48. By the end of this year, improvements will be available at six more stations: Iļģuciems, Bolderāja, Priedaine, Ķemeri, Carnikava, and Tukums II.
Raised Platforms and Amenities
The project includes building raised platforms with ramps to ensure step-free boarding and alighting. Information accessibility (audio and visual) will also be improved. Stations will feature canopies with benches, waste bins, signage, LED lighting, video cameras, and public announcement systems. Bike racks, paved pedestrian and cycle paths, safety barriers, and traffic lights at crossings are also being installed.
Challenges on the Krustpils Line and Next Steps
Difficulties arose on the Krustpils line, where the initial contractor failed to deliver—only 10% of the work was completed. The contract was terminated in 2025. Two new procurement procedures are underway to finish the work at 12 stations and stops. One tender was announced in June 2026, the other is planned for the summer. Construction is expected to start in the 2027 building season, with full project completion by 2029, within the framework of the EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027.
The modernization not only improves mobility but also supports EU climate goals by encouraging a shift from cars to trains.
