Koknese Begins Construction of Public Recreation Area with Universal Design
Koknese has launched the construction of a new public outdoor space at a downtown intersection, designed to be accessible for all residents, including inclusive playground equipment and sensory-friendly features.
In Koknese, at the intersection of Blaumaņa and 1905. gada streets, work has officially begun on a new public recreation area. The project aims to create a multifunctional environment suitable for residents of all ages and abilities.
The site will feature children's playground elements, including a carousel adapted for wheelchair users. Pedestrian paths will ensure accessibility for all visitors. Additionally, the area will include environmentally friendly lighting, a free drinking water refill station, and a charging point for digital devices. Security cameras will be installed, and restrooms will meet accessibility standards. Informational boards with a sensory map will help visitors navigate, and various plantings are planned.
Agrita Vagoliņa, head of the Koknese Association Administration, stated that topsoil removal is currently underway. The project also includes building an access road from the tourism information center to Indrānu iela, which runs past the “Gundega” preschool. Paving stones were chosen over asphalt to better fit the town's landscape and simplify future repairs. Previously, cars drove through residential yards, raising safety concerns.
Before construction, both registered and unregistered illegal structures that posed safety risks or hindered progress were removed. The municipality notified owners, but some did not respond, so municipal workers carried out the removal, and owners will be billed.
The total cost of the project is €984,800.37, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the municipal budget. Completion is expected by the end of this year.
