Krāslava residents face document services only twice a month after bank and migration office closures

Over the past five years Krāslava has lost its only bank branch and its Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) department, forcing residents to travel to Daugavpils or rely on limited local service.

Residents of the Krāslava municipality have lost several essential services over the past five years, as the town's only bank branch was closed and the local department of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) ceased operating.

With these services gone, residents now need to travel to Daugavpils, the nearest larger city, to handle banking matters or document-related procedures.

Limited workaround

To partially address the gap, PMLP now offers a reception service twice a month at the Krāslava Culture House. However, not all local residents are satisfied with this arrangement, as the limited number of available dates makes it difficult to plan around, alongside the challenge of arranging transport to the reception venue.

The situation reflects a broader pattern in which regional access to essential services is shrinking as providers concentrate operations in larger cities, leaving residents of smaller municipalities to spend extra time and resources to access services many took for granted.
