Krauklis: Large Number of Inexperienced Deputies in New Saeima Could Threaten Quality of Work

Vents Armands Krauklis, head of the Valka municipality council, said on TV24 that having more than 60 new deputies in the Saeima could affect the quality of decisions and the parliament's efficiency.

Vents Armands Krauklis, chairman of the Valka municipality council and of the board of the Vidzeme Party, voiced concern on the TV24 programme “Preses klubs” about whether the newly elected Saeima, Latvia's parliament, will be able to work effectively. In his view, a serious risk is the large number of deputies who lack experience. The programme was cited in a publication dated 7 November 2026.

Comparison to a new household

Krauklis likened the new parliamentary term to people who have not lived together before suddenly ending up in one household. At first, he said, the atmosphere is usually favourable and hopes are high, but in everyday work differences and disagreements become increasingly noticeable.

According to him, enthusiasm alone is not enough to ensure good parliamentary work. If deputies lack experience and mutual cooperation, the first months can prove difficult.

Share of inexperienced deputies

The politician is particularly concerned that the Saeima has more than 60 new deputies. They still need to learn how the parliament is organised and the principles of political cooperation. Because the Saeima's work is a systematic process, a large share of inexperienced members could, in Krauklis's view, create additional risks for both the quality of decisions and the efficiency of the parliament.

Public mood

Krauklis also pointed to public sentiment. Some people look to the new Saeima with hope, while others are markedly pessimistic. He considers such a gap in expectations undesirable, as a parliament cannot produce instant miracles.

The politician stressed that sensible decisions yield results gradually, while the consequences of ill-considered decisions can be felt soon. The public should be prepared for the fact that substantial change takes time.
