Russian authorities claim that after months of fighting, they have fully captured the city of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region. The battle for this settlement, which had a pre-war population of 78,000, had been ongoing since the end of last year.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that the city is now completely under Russian control. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, meeting with the General Staff, thanked the troops and emphasized that the capture of Kostiantynivka has "great strategic importance." He also asserted that the Russian armed forces "continue to firmly hold the strategic initiative" on the front.
Russian forces commander Anton Grunis stated that the army is conducting "search and liquidation operations" against isolated Ukrainian soldiers who are trying to hide in buildings, basements, and ruins.
Kostiantynivka was one of the last Ukrainian bastions on the way to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk—two cities in the Donetsk region that are Russia's main targets in Donbas.
