The Russian business of the German retail chain Metro, which has been under temporary management since September, has transferred RUB 1 billion (about US$12.4 million) to support Russia's war against Ukraine. The information comes from Meduza, a Russian-language media outlet based in Latvia.

According to the company's statement, the money went to the People's Front. Everything for Victory! foundation. The funds are intended to equip Russian invading units with technical gear, including specialised vehicles, communications systems, reconnaissance assets and anti-drone equipment.

The company's explanation

Johannes Tholey, CEO of Metro in Russia, justified the decision by saying the company is part of Russia's economic system. In his words, it is therefore important to take part in the state's strategic initiatives.

Background

At the end of September, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree placing the Russian assets of the German retail chain Metro under temporary management. The donation has now followed.

The source gives no further details on who exactly serves as the temporary manager, how the donation was coordinated with Metro's management in Germany, or what the parent company's position is.
