Russia, experiencing a domestic fuel shortage, has begun importing gasoline from India via maritime routes, Reuters reported, citing industry sources.

According to one source, India has already shipped at least 60,000 metric tons to Russia. Another source said two tankers, each carrying 30,000 to 40,000 tons of gasoline, are en route to Russia. A third source told the agency that Russia plans to import 400,000 tons of gasoline per month from various countries.

In summer, Russia consumes at least 110,000 tons of gasoline per day, Reuters noted.

India is one of the largest buyers of Russian oil. In June, India’s crude oil imports from Russia hit a record — 2.7 million barrels per day, accounting for more than half of India’s total crude oil imports.

The fuel shortage has been exacerbated by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries, prompting Russia to increase fuel purchases from Belarus. Since early May, the price of Belarusian gasoline delivered to Russia has risen by 80%.
