Hundreds of Ukrainian women still held in Russian prisons, chances of release slim
Hundreds of Ukrainian women remain in Russian prisons with almost no hope of release through prisoner exchanges; the stories of two of them reveal brutal treatment behind bars.

Russian prisons currently hold hundreds of Ukrainian women. Most of them have very little hope of being freed through a prisoner exchange, and their fates often remain unknown to the wider public. In rare cases, the personal stories of individual imprisoned women come to light, revealing how difficult their daily existence behind bars has become.
One such story concerns a woman who had taken a soldier into her home and stubbornly continued to regard him as her adopted son. That decision later cost her dearly — she ended up in Russian custody.
Brutal treatment
The experience of another woman is even harsher. While in custody, she was subjected to cruel treatment — she was stripped, wrapped in tape and given electric shocks. Seven years have now passed since then, yet she still has not been able to return to her daughter.
The fates of both women reflect a broader problem: hundreds of Ukrainian women remain in Russian captivity for years, with no clear timeline or guarantee of release. The exchange process between the two sides moves slowly and unpredictably, leaving the future uncertain for most of the imprisoned women.
