Massive Russian strike exposes Ukraine's weak spot: ballistic missiles
On the night of July 30, Russia launched 358 air targets; Ukraine intercepted 320, but only one of nine ballistic missiles. At least ten people were killed and more than fifty wounded.
The large-scale Russian attack carried out on the night of July 30 has highlighted a significant gap in Ukraine's air defenses. While the existing layered protection copes well with slower drones and cruise missiles, fast ballistic missiles remain a serious challenge.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russia used 358 air targets in the attack — 74 missiles and 284 drones. Ukrainian forces managed to neutralize 320 targets: 265 drones, 54 cruise missiles and only one ballistic missile. Of the 61 Kh-101 or Kalibr cruise missiles, 54 were intercepted, but only one of nine Iskander-M, S-400 or North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles was shot down.
Intercepting ballistic missiles is complicated by their enormous speed. Some can reach Kyiv in just two to four minutes, leaving little time for warnings and air-defense response. Russia is also increasingly using maneuvers in the final stage of flight, making trajectories harder to predict and more difficult to counter.
The US-made Patriot systems are still considered the most effective weapon against ballistic missiles. However, their limited number and insufficient interceptor stocks do not allow full coverage of Ukrainian territory.
The attack hit Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Kherson and other regions. At least ten people were killed and more than fifty were injured. The worst destruction occurred in Radushne near Kryvyi Rih, where a missile destroyed a family home. Six people died — a six-year-old girl, boys aged 11 and 17, and the children's parents. Rescuers pulled two other children out of the rubble alive.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said initial information indicated the use of a North Korean missile; radar tracks corresponded to a KN-23 or KN-24. In Kyiv, a ballistic missile killed a 31-year-old man and wounded two others. In Lviv, a cruise missile strike killed one person and injured more than 30, including children.
The July 30 attack again demonstrated that Ukraine must deal with two very different air-defense problems. The multi-layered defense works well against drones and cruise missiles, but ballistic missiles require far more modern and expensive systems. Russia appears to be actively exploiting this weakness by combining large numbers of drones and cruise missiles with ballistic weapons, forcing Ukrainian air defense to respond to hundreds of targets at once and increasing the chance that the most dangerous missiles break through. Kyiv continues to ask allies for additional Patriot systems and interceptors while developing its own capabilities. Yet the latest statistics make it clear that ballistic missiles remain one of the most dangerous weapons used by Russia.
