Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the United List (AS) is meeting at 10:00 today with his party's deputies elected to the 15th Saeima, the country's parliament. The venue has not been disclosed, and no public statements are planned after the meeting. The gathering matters because Kulbergs is tasked with forming the next government, while no official talks on the shape of a coalition have yet taken place.

Why the meeting is closed

Kulbergs' office told the portal Delfi that the new AS parliamentary group is planning an off-site seminar outside Riga, because the group's rooms in the Saeima are not yet fully ready. According to the office, the agenda mainly covers internal and organisational matters, so the meeting is not open to the public. It also said Kulbergs has a lot to discuss with the elected deputies.

AS will hold 41 seats in the Saeima.

Forming the government

The calendar of the news agency LETA describes the purpose of the meeting as discussing the planned programme of changes and the process of forming a government.

After the Saeima election held on 3 October, which AS won, President Edgars Rinkēvičs asked Kulbergs to form the next government. No official talks on a potential coalition have taken place since. This week Kulbergs has invited representatives of the National Alliance and New Unity to coalition negotiations.
