Grain shipped from Russia in transit through Latvia belongs to companies from countries that are Latvia's allies. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the party "Apvienotais saraksts" (United List) said this on Wednesday, 14 October, in an interview on the morning programme "Rīta Panorāma" on Latvian Television.

According to the prime minister, the grain is being bought by companies from the United States, Japan and other countries. He raised this while commenting on the finding that Latvia cannot ban grain transit from Russia. Transit means that cargo simply crosses Latvian territory on its way to other countries and does not enter the Latvian market.

Kulbergs' explanation points to the owners of the grain being companies from Latvia's allied countries. The source gives no further details on volumes, specific companies or the legal provisions that limit a ban.
