On Tuesday, June 16, the French men's national football team began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal. In the third minute of the match, a bizarre incident occurred resulting in a serious referee error.
After Senegal earned a corner kick, a positional battle ensued near France's goal. French midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, while backpedaling, accidentally stepped on the foot of his own teammate, goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The goalkeeper immediately fell to the ground in pain. The referee noticed the fall and immediately blew his whistle, awarding a free kick to France.
France will play their next match on June 23 against Iraq, and conclude the group stage on June 26 against Norway. This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage. The group stage ends on June 27, followed by the round of 32 on June 28. Semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, the bronze medal match on July 18, and the final on July 19.
In the previous World Cup final in 2022 in Qatar, Argentina defeated France on penalties.
