Nearly 300 medicinal plants grow in a health garden by Lake Lāde, some from Kārlis Ulmanis's collection
In the Limbaži region, by the shore of Lake Lāde, Sandra Vidauska and Aija Viļčinska started building a medicinal plant and health garden three years ago that now holds almost 300 plants. Some of the plants originate from former President Jānis Ulmanis's collection.

By the shore of Lake Lāde in the Limbaži region, a special corner has taken shape over the past three years — a medicinal plant and health garden created together by Sandra Vidauska and Aija Viļčinska. It now contains nearly 300 different plant species.
The garden's story was featured on Latvian Radio's programme "Stiprie stāsti" (Strong Stories). For Aija, the place carries family significance, as her ancestors once lived by Lake Lāde, making her work there something of a return to her roots. For Sandra, the land became the place to finally realize a long-held dream of growing her own medicinal plant garden.
From seed to tea
The two women do not just grow the plants — they also process them, making herbal teas and plant hydrolats. Notably, some of the plants in the garden did not come from an ordinary source: they originate from the collection of former Latvian president Jānis Ulmanis, preserving a piece of historical heritage.
Sandra and Aija also continue to expand their knowledge of medicinal plants and regularly welcome visitors and tourists to the garden, introducing them to the properties and uses of the various plants.
