Severe storms hit Latgale: orange warning issued, firefighters respond to dozens of calls
On Sunday afternoon, an orange level warning was issued for eastern Latvia due to heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible hail. The State Fire and Rescue Service received 28 calls about fallen trees on roads, mostly in Rēzekne municipality and city.

Strong thunderstorm clouds continue to form in the eastern part of Latvia on Sunday afternoon. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has issued an orange level warning valid until 11 PM. The warning includes very heavy rain, wind gusts up to 20 meters per second, and possible hail. The most intense weather is expected in the southeastern regions of the country.
The storms have already caused damage in Latgale. The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received 28 calls between 1 PM and 2:30 PM about trees fallen on roads. Most incidents were in Rēzekne municipality and Rēzekne city – 21 calls. Firefighters also responded to Ludza and Preiļi municipalities. They sawed fallen trees and cleared roadways. There were also cases where trees fell on power lines.
Authorities urge residents to be cautious, stay indoors if possible, and follow official instructions. Thunderstorms can significantly affect outdoor activities, so people are advised to reconsider planned events and avoid staying in forests or open areas during the storm.
Earlier on Sunday, a yellow level warning for thunderstorms was in effect for parts of eastern Latvia. Due to previous storms, several hundred households experienced power outages.
