'Latgales piens' – the only full-range dairy processor in the region
Valērijs Haritonovs, chairman of the board of 'Latgales piens', says the company is the only full-range whole milk producer in Latgale and sources its milk exclusively from local farmers.
'Latgales piens' is the only company in the Latgale region that processes the full range of whole-milk products. This was stated by the company's board chairman, Valērijs Haritonovs, in an interview for Latvian Radio's programme "Kā labāk dzīvot" ("How to Live Better").
Raw milk sourced only from Latgale
According to Haritonovs, the company buys all the milk it needs exclusively from Latgale farmers, without relying on supplies from other parts of Latvia or from abroad. This approach means the company's operations have a direct impact on the incomes of local farmers, since 'Latgales piens' serves as a stable, ongoing outlet for milk produced in the region.
A pillar of the local economy and traditions
Haritonovs stressed that the company's importance goes beyond production itself — it also functions as a support for the local economy. In his view, the work of 'Latgales piens' helps preserve regional traditions tied historically to dairy farming in Latgale, while also providing a degree of social support to the local community.
The board chairman noted that being the region's only full-spectrum dairy processor brings additional responsibility. The company must maintain both a diverse product range and steady production, since for many Latgale dairy farmers, 'Latgales piens' is the main — or in some cases the only — channel for selling their milk.
