In Latvia, 15–25 People Annually Become Paralyzed After Diving Headfirst: Doctor
According to surgeon Artis Gulbis, between 15 and 25 individuals in Latvia are paralyzed every year after diving headfirst into water. The information was shared with LETA by Agnese Bauma, a representative of the Orto clinic.

Every year in Latvia, 15 to 25 people suffer permanent paralysis after diving headfirst into water, as reported by vertebrologist surgeon Artis Gulbis through the Orto clinic. These incidents predominantly occur during the summer months when people swim and jump into lakes, rivers, or other water bodies without considering the risks. A single careless jump can damage the spinal cord irreversibly.
Gulbis emphasizes the importance of safety: always check the water depth before jumping and avoid diving in unknown areas. Shallow water or hidden underwater obstacles pose a significant danger. Such injuries can lead to complete or partial lifelong paralysis, drastically altering the victim's life.
Medical professionals urge the public to exercise caution and responsibility. Although exact recovery rates are not provided, most affected individuals remain disabled for life. The annual statistics highlight a persistent public health concern that requires continuous awareness and preventive measures.
