On Sunday, Latvia commemorated the victims of communist genocide, marking 85 years since the first mass deportation that took place on the night of June 13–14, 1941. Remembrance moments and memorial events were held in several cities across the country, including Riga, where similar commemorations take place annually.

As time passes, fewer and fewer people remain who personally experienced that tragic night. This year's commemoration was especially significant, as 85 years have elapsed since the tragedy, and many survivors have since passed away. The memorial events serve as a reminder of the crimes committed by the communist regime and the victims who must not be forgotten.

Various remembrance events took place in cities—moments of silence, flower-laying ceremonies, and other rituals. These events have become an annual tradition, allowing society to collectively honor those who suffered under communist terror.
