New surveillance system deployed on Latvia's eastern border
A new surveillance device that provides visual and audio monitoring has been placed on Latvia's eastern border and is now being tested in real conditions, the National Armed Forces said.

A new surveillance system has been deployed on Latvia's eastern border, allowing visual and audio observation of what is happening in the border zone. The National Armed Forces (NBS) announced the move. The equipment is intended to improve situational awareness and help detect potential border violators in good time.
The device is currently being tested to check how well it works and how effective it is in real conditions.
Part of border security measures
The deployment is part of a broader set of measures to strengthen security on Latvia's eastern border, prompted by long-running pressure from illegal migration and the security situation in the region. The armed forces, working with the State Border Guard and other responsible institutions, continue to develop border surveillance capabilities by introducing modern technological solutions and improving the ability to respond promptly to possible threats.
Reinforced regime along the Belarus border
As previously reported, the government has extended the enhanced border security regime in the area bordering Belarus until the end of this year. The decision was made because of a heightened flow of illegal migrants organised by Belarus.
The reinforced control regime covers Ludza and the rural municipalities of Ludza region, Krāslava and the rural municipalities of Krāslava region, Augšdaugava region, the city of Daugavpils, and Kaunata rural municipality in Rēzekne region.
Latvia has faced pressure from illegal migrants organised by Belarus since August 2021.
