Latvian Tree Aims for Title of Europe's Best Tree of the Year
Latvia's results in a European contest for the tree of the year, nicknamed the tree Eurovision, keep improving. This spring the Elku linden in Valdemarpils placed 4th, and Europeans are urged to vote for the Latvian tree.

Latvia's entries in a Europe-wide contest for the title of the year's greatest tree, nicknamed the tree Eurovision, have been doing better over time. This spring the Elku linden in Valdemarpils took 4th place. Voters are now being urged to pick the Latvian tree as their favourite.
A growing contest
Since the contest began, the number of participants has more than doubled, from six to 15. The winners have also been moving closer to Latvia on the map. From 2022 to 2025, trees from Poland won, while this spring the winner came from Lithuania. That raises hopes that Latvia's turn may come next.
Latvia's results by year
The Latvian trees have placed as follows:
- 2022: the Aģe great oak, 9th place;
- 2023: the Sēja great oak, 12th place;
- 2024: the Kaņepji great oak, 9th place;
- 2025: the Mēri great oak, 8th place;
- this spring: the Elku linden in Valdemarpils, 4th place.
Latvia's results have improved year after year. For a Latvian tree to reach the top spot, Europeans would need to unite in the vote and choose the Latvian entry as their favourite.
