From 28 November 2026 to 21 February 2027, the Dome Hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art’s main building in Riga (1 Jāņa Rozentāla Square) will host “Stardust”, an exhibition by visual artist Laimdota Malle. It invites visitors to view matter as a changing environment in which forms emerge, transform and disappear.

What the exhibition is about

The show centres on potential understood as a field of possibilities and change. The works form a multi-part system in which materials, bodies and structures are in constant transformation. Abundant growth sits alongside gradual decay, control alongside vulnerability, and chaos alongside self-organisation.

According to the exhibition’s concept, matter briefly takes a particular form, then dissolves and rearranges into another. Each such configuration carries several possible futures, including the possibility that some remain unrealised.

Seven installations

The exhibition consists of seven installations. They present the accumulation and decay of matter, its division, classification and transformation, mechanisms of protection and control, and the possibility of forms and events that have not yet come to be. In the Dome Hall, the installations interact with the architecture of the space and with one another. Visitors move between different orders of things, from seemingly natural growth to laboratory-style control, and from dense accumulations of material to almost intangible structures.

The exhibition was created in collaboration with musician Sarma Gabrēna, who composed the soundscape, and spatial artist Aleksejs Beļeckis. It was supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation.

About the artist

Laimdota Malle works with wax, ceramic plaster and other translucent materials. By making spatial imprints, she explores transformations of matter and life forms. She holds a master’s degree in visual art from the Art Academy of Latvia and completed a master’s programme in fine art at Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.

In 2026 she was nominated for the Latvian Art Award 2025 in the “Artist of the Year” category. Her work has also been nominated for the Purvītis Prize (2023) and the “Kilogram of Culture” award (2022 and 2025). Her notable solo exhibitions include “OOZE” in Prague and Riga, “Scare Me, Soothe Me, Scare Me” at the RSU Anatomy Museum and “I Bit into the Skin of the Glass Lagoon” at the Riga Contemporary Art Space.
