Leicestershire's relegation fears deepen after 27-point deduction

Leicestershire's hopes of staying in Division One of the County Championship have been dealt a severe blow after the independent Cricket Discipline Panel deducted 27 points for breaching pitch preparation rules during their victory over Glamorgan in August.

The penalty, announced midway through the club's penultimate match of the season, has dropped the Foxes to the bottom of the table. It strips them of all 19 points earned in the Glamorgan win, adds an extra eight-point penalty, and includes a £5,000 fine. A further eight-point deduction has been suspended for a year. The club has 10 working days to lodge an appeal and said in a statement it was reviewing its options.

Leicestershire's fate now largely depends on their ongoing match against Hampshire. Failure to win will confirm their return to Division Two. Their position looks difficult, with Hampshire closing the second day on 255 for three in their second innings, a lead of 225 runs.

The punishment is a major setback for a club playing in the top flight for the first time in 22 years, after their win over Glamorgan three weeks earlier had boosted survival hopes following a difficult return campaign. Match officials asked the ECB's pitch advisor, Andy Mackay, to inspect the surface after the game, following comments from both sides' coaches that conditions had been tough for batters and drier than intended.

The club argues the sanction is harsh given the match produced a competitive four-day contest, though it acknowledges the pitch preparation rules were known in advance.
