A section of the security fence at Leipzig airport in Germany was found knocked down on Saturday evening, and police suspect a car drove through it. The incident draws attention because the airport was recently the scene of a drone incident that German authorities attribute to Russia.

What police said

A police spokeswoman said it could be stated with a high degree of certainty that a vehicle had driven through the fence. However, a check of the airport grounds found neither a car nor any people who were not allowed to be there.

Location near Russian aircraft

According to the newspaper Bild, the fence was breached in the part of the airport where three Russian cargo planes are located. They were banned from leaving the airport in 2022, after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Operations in the northern part of the airport were suspended for a time, and Amazon aircraft had to use the southern runway.

Earlier incident

On 4 August, a drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig airport near Ukrainian cargo planes. According to media reports, another drone most likely hit a DHL cargo plane a few minutes after the first unmanned aircraft was spotted. German authorities believe it was an attempted act of sabotage by Russia.

The source does not say whether Saturday's fence incident is being linked to the earlier case.
