LFF Ethics Committee Still No Decision on Super Nova vs RFS Match

Five weeks after launching an investigation into the May 29 Latvian Virslīga match between Super Nova and RFS, the Latvian Football Federation's Ethics Committee has yet to issue a ruling, continuing to gather information and conduct interviews.

The Latvian Football Federation's (LFF) Ethics Committee began proceedings earlier this summer regarding a top-tier match, but no decision has been reached yet. The game between Super Nova and RFS on May 29 drew attention not only for the scoreline (2:1 in favor of RFS) but also due to questions about Super Nova's starting lineup, players left on the bench, and substitutions that were described as surprising and even illogical given the match situation and the club's apparent aim to take points from the favorites. Head coach Maksims Rafaļskis dismissed the criticisms on social media, but some questions remained unanswered.

On June 8, the LFF announced the start of an investigation, citing information that gave grounds to look into "possible conflicts of interest involving several clubs and players and violations of fair play principles related to the failure to observe the rules on player transfers with loan terms." Since that announcement, five weeks have passed, and the Virslīga season has progressed through several rounds, but the case is still being reviewed, as LFF Secretary General Arturs Gaidels told Sportacentrs.com. He noted that the Ethics Committee continues to collect information and interview relevant individuals, though he himself is not directly involved in the committee's work.

Ethics Committee Secretary Konstantīns Rubīns, who also serves as LFF's integrity and fair play specialist, declined to provide detailed public comments, stating only that the case remains under active review and that an announcement would be made once a decision is reached. Rubīns explained that the committee is still gathering information and interviewing involved parties. It is worth recalling that the LFF previously confirmed rule changes prohibiting situations where loaned players are barred from playing against their parent club. However, research published by Sportacentrs.com points to ongoing trends in this area. Interestingly, Super Nova and RFS were drawn together today in the quarterfinals of the Latvian Cup.
